“Summer Sonic Boom” and Marty Friedman in FANTA band

15 Mar

The American rock band KISS released a new album last autumn titled “Sonic Boom“.

And every summer for the past ten years or so, there is a rock festival in Japan called “Summer Sonic” (actually this is one of the numerous rock festivals in Japan every year).

Well, my good friend Masa told me today that KISS is planning to play at this year’s “Summer Sonic” festival near Tokyo this August to promote their “Sonic Boom” album.

Maybe they’ll call their shows at the festival the “Summer Sonic Boom Tour“. šŸ˜‰

————————————————

If you like heavy metal music you probably recognize the name Marty Friedman.

He used to be the guitarist for the American heavy metal band “Megadeth“.

Marty played on Megadeth's excellent "Countdown To Extinction" album.

Marty Friedman has a Japanese wife and can speak Japanese. When he was a member of Megadeth, he would do all of the band’s media interviews in Japanese when they toured here in Japan (usually Dave Mustaine, the lead singer, does the interviews).

After he quit Megadeth, he and his wife moved to Tokyo (now, like me, he’s an American KISS fan living in Tokyo with his Japanese wife šŸ˜‰ ).

Now that he lives in Japan, he makes a living by occasionally co-hosting music shows on TV, writing for music magazines, playing in a variety of Japanese bands, and he has released albums of remakes of Japanese songs.

Most recently, he has recorded TV commercial for the Fanta soft drink with three Japanese musicians and Akenono, the former ęØŖē¶± (Sumo Grand Champion).

In these commercials, Marty Friedman and the others (who are all famous in Japan…actually, Marty Friedman is the least famous of the five in Japan) are in a “FANTA” rock band.

Since they are all musicians in real life except Akebono (the former sumo champion)…in the commercials, Akebono plays the drums but always messes up.

The reason that these five celebrities were chosen for the “FANTA band” is that the first initial of each member’s name spells F.A.N.T.A.
They are: Marty Friedman (guitar), Ayanocozey (sometimes called “DJ OZMA”) (bass), Nana Tanimura (vocals), Takamizawa (aka: Takamiy (of the Japanese band “The Alfee“)) (guitar), and Akebono (drums (and “bodyguard” šŸ™‚ )).

These commercials are to promote the new Fanta drink in Japan…”Moo Moo White“.
(Click here to read the post I wrote about this drink.)

Here a video of the TV commercial that Fanta released (it doesn’t show who the band members are…in an attempt to build up anticipation):

And here’s the latest one (Akebono, the sumo wrester / drummer drops his drum sticks):

Also, in Japan, yesterday was the holiday “White Day“.

It seems that KISS were planning to play at the “Summer Sonic 2010” festival…but canceled.

So, the rumor was true. They were coming to Japan.
    But it didn’t work out.

If you can read Japanese, you can read about it on the official “Summer Sonic” website.

My friend Masa (that I mentioned in this post) told me about this news.

He wrote about it on his site too:
      http://www2s.biglobe.ne.jp/~kiss/

So, KISS was supposed to come to Japan this summer but canceled…
and Ace Frehley (ex. KISS) was supposed to play at the “Loud Park ’09” festival last October, but he canceled too.
(He canceled only three days before the day of the festival!)

KISS is now tentatively planning to come to Japan this autumn for their “Sonic Boom” tour…not with a festival.

Glad you like TSHF, tokyo! What’s your favorite song from it?

I have two: “Die Dead Enough” and “The Scorpion”.

I’m looking at the album’s Wikipedia entry and apparently the Best Buy version has an exclusive “hidden” track featuring a cover of KISS’ “Strange Ways”! I never knew that existed, I wish I had that version of the album.

      >Whatā€™s your favorite song from it?
      >I have two: ā€œDie Dead Enoughā€ and ā€œThe Scorpionā€.

I like those two songs plus “Back In The Day” and “Something I’m Not” and “Of Mice And Men”.

Is that too many? If I had to narrow it down to two, I think I’d choose “The Scorpion” and “Something I’m Not”.

      >an exclusive ā€œhiddenā€ track featuring a cover of KISSā€™ ā€œStrange Waysā€!

I want to hear that too. I just read that Wikipedia article too…it says Megadeth begins that song with twenty seconds of Black Sabbath’s song “N.I.B.“. I love both songs!

I have Megadeth’s remakes of Alice Cooper’s “No More Mr. Nice Guy” and Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid”…but I never heard them do a KISS song (even though Marty Friedman is a big fan (as I wrote in this post)).

I found out on a message board that apparently their cover of “Strange Ways” was originally meant for inclusion on KISS’ Kiss My A** self-tribute album.

I was told it appears in the band’s Warchest box collection.

I heard that originally the “KISS My @**” CD was going to feature metal and hard rock bands (such as Megadeth and Anthrax, etc) redoing KISS song…but instead they filled it with pop bands that I’ve mostly never heard of.

(It does have Yoshiki of the Japanese metal band “X Japan” playing an instrumental version of “Black Diamond” on the piano).

Speaking of Japanese remakes of KISS songs…do you have the ć€Œåœ°ē„ć®č³žč³›ć€ (“KISS Tribute in Japan“) CD that features Japanese bands redoing KISS songs?

      >I hope this rumour turns out to be true.

Are you in Japan? Will you attend the “Summer Sonic” festival this August?

      >Masa Ito is quite a reliable source.

My friend Masa that told me about KISS playing at this festival (and I linked to his site in this post) isn’t the Japanese rock music critic (and Burrn! magazine editor) Masa Itoh.

      >Kiss rules!!

      I agree. They’re a good band.

By the way, although KISS hasn’t been confirmed for the 2010 Summer Sonic lineup yet…bands such as The Smashing Pumpkins, Slash (ex. Guns ‘N Roses), The Offspring, and many others are confirmed.
Click here if you want to see the confirmed list of bands scheduled to perform there this August.

You two should check out “The System Has Failed” from 2004. One of my favorite Megadeth albums.

“The World Needs a Hero” was okay, but it wasn’t the best album to put out while trying to wash the taste of “Risk” out of everyone’s mouth.

“United Abominations” is good but took me some time to get into it, “Endgame” is okay but there’s not much memorable about it (to me).

By the way, I think I’m in love with Nana Tanimura. Gorgeous woman. <=)

Actually, my friend told me that he thinks “The System Has Failed” is a great album.

So, both you and he recommend it. Two people with excellent taste in music…so I’ll pick it up.

        I got it today.
Quite good (but I think I still like “Countdown To Extinction” best from the Megadeth catalog).

For a while Megadeth was an amazing band. The last few albums they put out before the original band broke up were kinda lousy. (IMO.)
Dave is back with a new Megadeth and supposedly the albums are good and doing relatively well, but I haven’t heard any of them.

I agree. All of their albums up to “Youthanasia” are great…I especially like “Countdown To Extinction” (album cover pictured in this post above).

But the last Megadeth album I bought was “The World Needs A Hero“…which was quite disappointing.

But I also heard that their last two albums (“United Abominations” and “Endgame“) are very good.
I think I’ll rent them when my local CD rental shop gets them and I’ll put them on my I-pod if they’re good.

It won’t surprise anyone who know how he talks, but Gene Simmons (bassist for the rock band KISS) recently said in an interview when he was asked about KISS‘s live show…

ā€œI would love to play on the same stage as U2, the Stones and anybody out there who considers themselves a world champion.

ā€œYou come on up on that stage with us, baby. Show me what you got, and then weā€™ll show you what the big boys do.ā€

    (Gene Simmons)

It may seem pompous of him, but that’s his personality…and anyways, it’s true…KISS put on the best rock concert possible!
