Beer posters

I’m sure that many countries have beer posters and advertisements that feature pretty women.

I remember the Budweiser Beer “Bud Girls” ads in America.

Budweiser Beer has "Bud Girls" in Japan, too.

It’s interesting to see how advertising changes and evolves over time in a particular culture.
Pre-World War II beer posters are quite fun to look at. They’re so different from more modern advertisements. Sometimes Japanese 居酒屋 (pubs) and restaurants will have some of these old, retro beer posters on their walls. I like it when I go to a place that has them.

When I first came to Japan, it was very common to see beer posters in Japan that showed girls in bikinis holding a mug of beer.

Nowadays beer posters with girls in bikinis can still be seen…but it seems to be more of the trend to have the models in the beer posters be more “conservatively dressed”.

Beer posters are interesting, especially how they’ve changed over time…but what really matters is that the beer is cold!

Sapporo アイスラガー Beer

Today I bought a case of a new “limited edition for 2010” beer by Sapporo Breweries.

It’s called 「サッポロアイスラガー」 (“Sapporo Ice Lager“).

I couldn't resist a "ice" lager beer with polar bears on the can...it gives an image of being a real cold beer---perfect now that the weather is so hot!

Technically it’s not a “beer”, per se…but a 「発泡酒」 (low-malt beer).
Actually I prefer 発泡酒 (low-malt beer) because it tastes the same as beer but it’s cheaper in Japan because it doesn’t have the high beer tax added to it’s price.
So, beer or 発泡酒 (low-malt beer)…I enjoy drinking both but I usually buy 発泡酒 (low-malt beer) because of the price difference.

Anyways, I knew about this 「サッポロアイスラガー」 (“Sapporo Ice Lager“) beer before I bought it because of the funny TV commercial with two polar bears complaining about the heat and looking for something cold to drink.

Space Beer

Sapporo Beer stored barley seeds on board the International Space Station for five months.

With those barley seeds they made some beer that they intend to use for experiments of some kind (maybe how beer made with ingredients grown in zero-gravity tastes 😉 ).

But they’ve bottled some of the beer for consumer consumption.
They’re calling the beer brewed with barley that was in outer space “Space Barley“.

The amount of beer that Sapporo Beer is offering the public is a very limited supply, and, as you might imagine, expensive.

Only 250 six-packs of the 330ml bottles will be sold. The price is ¥10,000 (about US$113) for a six-pack.

I’d like to try the “Space Barley” beer and I’d definitely add the bottle to my collection, if I had one…but ¥10,000 for a six-pack is pretty pricey. If they sold individual bottles for 1/6 the price, at ¥1667 (US$18.83), I’d probably get one then.

If you want to buy a six-pack of the very limited-edition Sapporo “Space Barley” beer, you have to order it online by 2009 December 24.

There is another way to try this beer, though.
Sapporo Beer is offering free tours and tasting of the “Space Barley” beer to 30 couples.
To enter the drawing for the beer tasting, you have to send a postcard to Sapporo Beer by December 15th. I’d enter this contest if the date of the tour / beer tasting was on a holiday rather than a weekday afternoon.

I don’t claim to be a beer ソムリエ (sommelier), but I know what I like.

I’m gonna try and make a list here of as many of the different beers I’ve tried that I can remember. And I’m gonna try to rate them (with a rating scale of 1-3 stars (★ ～ ★★★). One star (★) being the lowest, and three (★★★) is the highest).

I also wrote the beer’s country of origin.

The star ratings are simply my personal opinion. Kirin Beer is my favorite. And I think any cold lager is good.

I may have tried others that I’ve forgotten. This is all that I can remember off the top of my head.

As you can probably tell by my ratings, I love beer…and I’m not real picky. But I’ve tried Guinness Beer and I didn’t think much of it. やっぱり、I like lager beer.

「麒麟ビール」 (Kirin Beer) is my favorite…but I’ll take any cold lager!

Japan has five major brewers:

• Kirin Beer – This beer began in the late nineteenth-century in 横浜 (Yokohama, Japan). It’s named after a mythological creature called a 「麒麟」 (kirin) that looks like a dragon (it’s featured on the beer cans)…not named after a giraffe (which is 「キリン」 (kirin), also).

Many people don’t know that hidden in the creature on Kirin Beer cans is the word 「キリン」 (kirin):

• Asahi Beer -Started in 大阪 (Osaka, Japan).





The Asahi Beer brewery is a Tokyo landmark.

• Suntory Beer – Also started in 大阪 (Osaka, Japan).
  Suntory Beer got it’s name because the founder’s name was Mr. Torii…or Torii-san. So, he took the words Torii and san and reversed them into San-torii and changed the spelling to Suntory.

(Another famous Japanese company got their name in a similar manner. The Bridgestone company was founded by Mr. Ishibashi…which translates into Stone bridge, which he reversed to Bridgestone.)

Sapporo Beer bought the Yebisu Beer brewery (which was from Tokyo), so they make that beer as well.
