OzzFest Japan 2015

23 Nov

Yesterday, my wife, our daughters and I went to OzzFest Japan 2015!
It was great!

OzzFest Japan 2015

Two years ago I went to OzzFest Japan 2013 with my friend.

2015-11-22 10.33.06

Sign outside the Makuhari Messe venue for OzzFestJapan 2015.

It was a long day. We were there for twelve hours!
Here’s the line-up of bands we saw:

OzzFest Japan 2015, day-2, morning line-up

OzzFest Japan 2015, day-2, morning line-up

OzzFest Japan 2015, day-2, afternoon line-up

OzzFest Japan 2015, day-2, evening line-up

I bought an Ozzy Osbourne T-shirt and sweatshirt:

All of the bands were very entertaining! But the bands that we were really looking forward to seeing were on from 2:50PM til the end.

At 2:50 were the Japanese band “9mm Parabellum Bullet” (called “kyuu-milli” for short).

9mm Parabellum Bullet took the stage.

My second daughter has been a big fan of this band for years. She’s seen them in concert a number of times. This was the first time that I’ve seen them on stage…though, I’m familiar with their songs since my daughter is a fan.

After that was Black Label Society! I’m a fan of this band! After they played, my daughters said that Zakk Wylde is “cool”.

And then the Japanese “horror rock” band 人間椅子 (Ningen-Isu) played. I saw this band before at OzzFest Japan 2013. They were inspired by the Japanese horror writer Edogawa Ranpo (who took his pen-name from his inspiration: horror author Edgar Allen Poe):

And then the loud, energetic band Hatebreed took the stage!

Next was Baby Metal. Do you know about the Japanese band Baby Metal? They combine heavy-metal with J-pop. (Click here to read my post about them.)
I don’t really care for their music…but they have many dedicated fans! In fact, Baby Metal were the only act at OzzFestJapan to have a rule limiting the number of their T-shirts that fans could buy, and they were still the only act to have their merchandise completely be sold-out!

At 6:50PM, Jane’s Addiction took the stage. This is another band that has many fans but I don’t really care for.
I had heard that Yoshiki would be performing a song with them…and sure enough, before one their songs, the singer announced their “friend Yoo-shee-kee” (a very non-Japanese pronunciation of the Japanese name よしき).

And then…it was time for Ozzy Osbourne & friends!

"Ozzy Osbourne & friends"!!

In addition to his current band members, Gus G., Rob Nicholson and Tommy Clufetos (who is a very cool drummer!)…Geezer Butler (“Black Sabbath”) played bass on all Black Sabbath songs that Ozzy played, and at times the guitar position altered between Zakk Wylde (“Black Label Society”), Dave Navarro (“Jane’s Addiction”) and Tom Morello (“Rage Against The Machine”).

For the final encore, the Black Sabbath song “Paranoid” was played and all members (Ozzy Osbourne, Gus G., Rob Nicholson, Tommy Clufetos, Geezer Butler, Zakk Wylde, Dave Navarro and Tom Morello all took the stage together…and then, as Ozzy promised, the popular Japanese mascot character “Funassyi” (who represents Funabashi, Chiba, Japan) was invited onstage to get hosed down by Ozzy Osbourne. (Throughout his show, Ozzy sprayed the front row of the audience with a foam hose, as he often does at his concerts).

Nice post on Day 2… Just fyi but his name is Dave Navarro, not Naverro and to see Jane’s Addiction back together and live was epic. Brought back a lot of memories. The entire weekend was insane. All in all a bit too much thrash for my taste but I appreciated it still. I’d rather see more true metal bands than the screamo stuff. Hatebreed was awesome, I am a new fan. Korn was epic as usual. We saw them about 10 years ago and they still sound amazing. Evanescence was the shocker, I was looking forward to seeing them but they exceeded all of my expectations. Amazing! I was wondering how they fit in to Ozzfest but they rocked the house! To see Ozzy live before he “retires” was the best. Although my feet had checked out after a few songs and I had to push my way to the back to sit down for a bit, he sounded and looked great.

I’m not a fan of BabyMetal either but they were entertaining, I see the draw they have.

I’m definitely feeling my age today. 20 years ago that weekend wouldn’t have been so tame on my part. I have a slight foot injury too so I wasn’t able to get fully into jumping and such.

It was a great weekend! My ears are still not quite right and my feet took some punishment but all worth it!

      >Nice post on Day 2

Thank you. Are you going to write a post about OzzFest too?

      >his name is Dave Navarro, not Naverro

Thank you for pointing that out! I noticed that I made a few other careless typing mistakes in this post…I think I’ve corrected them all now. If you see any others, please tell me.

      >to see Jane’s Addiction back together and live was epic. Brought back a lot of memories.

I’ve never been a fan. I only know one of their songs…and, ironically, they didn’t play that one!
It’s good that you could see a band that you like a lot!

      >too much thrash for my taste but I appreciated it still. I’d rather see more true metal bands than the screamo stuff.

To me, the line-up was really good! Better, in fact, than OzzFest Japan 2013!
If the line-up was up to me though, I would’ve replaced AniMetal, Baby Metal and Jane’s Addiction (sorry!) with other bands…such as Godsmack, Adrenaline Mob and Jackyl or Avenged Sevenfold!

      >Evanescence was the shocker, I was looking forward to seeing them but they exceeded all of my expectations. Amazing!

Really? Not really my taste. I didn’t go to Saturday’s show, though.

      >To see Ozzy live before he “retires” was the best.

Yes! It was my second time to see him. My wife and kids’ first time. Ozzy Osbourne is legend! Have you seen his concert before Sunday?

      >after a few songs and I had to push my way to the back to sit down

Not me. Ozzy is who I was waiting to see the most!

      >I’m definitely feeling my age today.

Well, you went to both days! By the way, which day did you enjoy more?
Yesterday (Monday), was a Japanese holiday, so I could rest after Sunday’s long day!

      >My ears are still not quite right

We wore earplugs…and it was still plenty loud!

Yes, I will do a post when I catch up a bit. Work has doubled due to staff shortage recently and with our trips and such I just haven’t had the focus or energy to blog much.

I totally agree with switching out a few of the screamo bands (and BabyMetal now that I have seen them) with Godsmack and others. Seriously, if Godsmack had been there my heart would have burst with that line up.

No apologies needed for not liking Jane’s Addiction, they are definitely different than most metal bands.

Saturday was great but I think Sunday was better. This was my first time seeing Ozzy but I’ve been a fan since the 80’s and Jane’s Addiction, plus I’m rather infatuated with Dave Navarro. If we had been closer to the stage I would have held out for all of Ozzy’s show, it was hard to see the stage where we were so after like the 3rd song I went back to sit for a bit. The concert was great and honestly I feel honored to have seen him live now.

We have seen some really amazing concerts while in Japan. It has truly added to our experience living here.

I look forward to reading it.

        >Saturday was great but I think Sunday was better.

Yeah, the line-up was better … that’s why I chose Sunday.

        >I’ve been a fan (of Ozzy) since the 80’s

        Me, too!

        >We have seen some really amazing concerts while in Japan.

Me, too… including KISS (many times), classic line-up of Guns ‘N Roses, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Motley Crue, Aerosmith and L.A. Guns, and others.
