In Japanese culture, when someone goes on a trip or even to a major amusement park, they feel compelled to buy お土産 (souvenirs) for friends and family…and even their co-workers (if they’re aware of the trip).
Normally, they like to give a “regional” souvenir. Something that represents the city or country that they visited…even a “I ♥ NY ” key-chain from a trip to New York could be a gift good enough for a co-worker or such.
When Japanese people go on a domestic trip (visit another town or city within Japan), it’s popular to buy a local food item as a souvenir.
So, currently, Kit-Kat Japan are offering ご当地お土産 (Regional Souvenirs).

Sorry about the long delay in responding, but my favorite place in Japan is Kamakura. Although it looks like only rich people can afford to live there!

No, we did not. We spent a lot of time at Hasedera — so beautiful. But we did visit the Arashiyama bamboo groves on an earlier trip in 2010, where it seems they have a nice cottage industry of processing the various types of bamboo. Japan has soooo many beautiful places. I wish I had more funds to stay in Japan longer.

This is great. I should also thank you for your previous Kit Kat posts. When I was in Japan I looked for them specially. I got some of the green tea ones and one of the cheesecake. I wish I’d found the orange!
I did the Japanese thing of getting these for friends and family, and they were widely appreciated.

Where, in Japan, did you buy Japanese Kit-Kat? There are certain areas (Tokyo train station, for instance) that have many various flavors.

Tokyo train station is pretty confusing, I only bought akiben there. I think I got the Kit-Kat from a Don Quijote near my hotel.

Tokyo Station is huge and I guess it’s confusing if you’re not used to it. But it has a very large selection of souvenirs (not only Kit-Kat)…including many that are specific to Tokyo.

I have tried the strawberry, green tea and orange ones. All wonderful. I asked my son what he wants from Japan since we’re going again in a month, and he asked that I bring him back some KitKats. Guess I’ll have to fill a suitcase with all of the different flavors as omiyage for my son, neighbors, friends, co-workers . . .

My son is almost 30, and doesn’t live on Kauai (he’s on Oahu). So yes, I’ll be in Japan for a couple of weeks next month with my “boyfriend” (don’t know what else to call him – we’re not married), and probably will spend a lot of time looking for omiyage (omiage) to bring back home. This will be my 3rd trip, and we’ll spend about a week in Kumamoto and Hakata, and the rest of the 2nd week in Osaka, Kyoto and Tokyo. Japan, here I come!!!

Where I typed “kitkat” above, I meant to type “cheesecake.” I purchased the strawberry and cheesecake flavors in Japan. The green tea kitkats I was already familiar with, because our parent company is Japanese and visitors from Tokyo often bring them when they stop in our office.

I was there for work. I spent most of the time in the area of Kanda and Otemachi, but I also took some trips out to Hiroshima, Osaka, Kyoto, and Yokohama. Those posts are upcoming on my own blog.
