Uniqlo is a Japanese clothing chain store that has expanded overseas.
I have some clothes from their stores. But I’m not sure how I feel about the T-shirts they’ve sold with heavy metal band logos such as AC/DC, Metallica and Aerosmith!
I have T-shirts from all of those bands from concerts I’ve attended. That’s where heavy metal T-shirts are supposed to be from: heavy metal concerts.
And that’s who are supposed to wear them: heavy metal fans.
Heavy metal is not a fad like pop music!

I discovered Uniqlo for the first time last year in Hokkaido. Everybody else on our tour group seemed to already know about it.

I think the Uniqlo stores are pretty similar, although I seem to remember there were brighter colors available in the NY store. But it could have been the specific collections on sale at the time that made the difference.
I believe there are many Japanese temples in the US, but I don’t know for sure. I don’t think they are all as lovely as the ones in Japan! I think the Cherry Blossom festival in DC is the biggest festival, but it is more of a celebration of all things Japanese. nationalcherryblossomfestival.org and sakuramatsuri.org

I have been waiting for Uniqlo to open a store in the Washington, DC area–there were rumors of a store right near me but then that died and now it’s supposed to open at a mall a bit farther away. It is kind of weird to buy a band shirt from a regular store, right? Years ago I made the mistake of doing that and then I never wore the shirt more than once because it was embarrassing to admit I hadn’t been to the concert. I am more interested in the yukata collection they just announced–I wonder if they accounted for “Western” size when they made the ones for the US? : ) Hoping for a local retail store so I can try them on.

Thinking about that more, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with wearing a shirt of a band you like even if you didn’t attend their concert.
What I was going on about was chain stores such as Uniqlo selling the shirts…and then seeing them worn by many people who most likely don’t really like the music…just wear it because it’s become “fashionable”.

I heard on TV that Uniqlo is having a bit of a cultural problem at their overseas branches because they’ve decided to train their overseas staff to follow common Japanese store clerk etiquette…and what is simply normal procedure in Japan doesn’t always “translate” in other countries.

Metal-theme shirts being fashionable is definitely a weird concept–it’s such a specific type of music. I can’t imagine wearing a band shirt of a band that I didn’t know or like.
I have shopped in Uniqlo both in Japan and in New York, but I don’t go to either place that often, unfortunately. : ) I hadn’t noticed anything about the staff in the NY store, but it was a busy store so I didn’t have much interaction with the staff.
I would like to get at least a yukata to wear on occasion–there is a Buddhist temple near me that holds an Obon festival and I could wear one to that. There are other occasions here in DC such as the Cherry Blossom festival that I would feel comfortable wearing a yukata to.

Yeah these kind of heavy metal shirts popped up here in Europe also in these clothing stores some ten years ago. Before that you could only buy them on concerts or from some metal magazines.
Funny that you mention Uniqlo, no one (including me) has ever heard of it before in Europe but there was now this scandal in China of a “p0rл video” being filmed in one of the changing rooms in Beijing’s Uniqlo. Usually no one would care about it however in China it seems to be a serious problem and hence it even managed its way to European news :p

Just saw that uniqlo opened their first store in Germany last year and are planning for more now, however as they haven’t reached yet a German wide presence the normal person, including me, usually don’t realize those stores at the moment.
