The best vending machine drink I have ever had was a can of melon soda from a machine next to the entrance to Hiroshima Castle. It was huge, 500ml/1pt, so my husband and I shared it. We have never found the drink anywhere else and it has taken on the aspect of legend in our memories. We actually have conversations that start “Do you remember that can of melon soda we drank in Hiroshima?” 😳

Really? Melon soda is actually a fairly common drink in Japan…not difficult to find at all. Was that an especially good variety of melon soda?

It was. More like a cream soda. The other melon sodas we’ve tried were nice, but not a patch on that giant can we had in Hiroshima!

I wonder which one it was.

I seem to remember Cola Shock being alcoholic. Is this a different version of it?

      >I seem to remember Cola Shock being alcoholic.

Yes, that’s right. Five years ago, Kirin Beverage Co. had a vodka and cola drink called “Cola Shock”.

      I wrote about it here:

The drink mentioned in this post is from a different (overseas) company. I don’t think Kirin makes Cola Shock anymore…so I guess it doesn’t matter that this drink has the same name.

Ahhh, ok. Thanks for the answer! I remember trying the alcoholic one a few times and thinking it wasn’t half bad.

        Yeah, it was pretty good.
