Tokyo is the world’s (second) “most livable city”

25 Jun

Monocle magazine makes a list of the world’s most livable cities every year.

Tokyo is ranked number 2 on the list behind Copenhagen, Denmark.

In fact, three Japanese cities, Tokyo, Kyoto, and Fukuoka are on the top ten.

Six of the other seven cities on the top ten most livable cities in the world are European.

The criteria used to judge the most livable cities were:
economics, society, functionality, everyday living, happiness of people, crime rate, health care, public schools, public transportation, access to nature, culture, sunlight/climate, number of electronic vehicle charging spots, ease of starting a new business and tolerance.

Here is Monocle‘s list of the top ten most livable cities in the world:

  1. Copenhagen, Denmark
  2. Tokyo, Japan
  3. Melbourne, Australia
  4. Stockholm, Sweden
  5. Helsinki, Finland
  6. Vienna, Austria
  7. Zürich, Switzerland
  8. Munich, Germany
  9. Kyoto, Japan
  10. Fukuoka, Japan

Grilled Kit-Kat

24 Jun

Many people now know that Japan has an incredible selection of unique flavors of Kit-Kat.

I wrote a post around five years ago about many of them.

I’ve actually written quite a few posts about Kit-Kat in Japan (click here to see a search of them).

One of the newest, and most unique so far, Kit-Kat flavors in Japan is 焼きキットカット (“Grilled Kit-Kat”) !

These are meant to be put in a toaster-oven for a couple of minutes to make them toasted brown.

What do you think? Would you try them? Have you tried them already?

Japanese TV Show: Japan Will Win World Cup Match Because Colombia Tend to Lose on Tuesdays

Will Japan win tomorrow’s important match against Columbia?
Fate seems to say so…according to one Japanese talk show!

Tokyo Desu

Japan are currently third in their World Cup group, having taken just one point from two games, and must beat Colombia in their final group game on Tuesday to have any hope of qualifying for the knockout stages (and the opportunity for fans to clean up the stadium after more than the standard three games)

Japan's current position (table: BBC Sport) Japan’s current position (table: BBC Sport)

Despite Colombia having proven themselves as formidable opponents with wins over the Ivory Coast and Greece, fans of Blue Samurai have no need to worry. A Japanese TV show has identified a pattern that means Colombia are almost certain to be defeated: They usually lose games played on Tuesdays.

Games against In the past four years Colombia have only lost four competitive matches – against Argentina, Ecuador, Venezuela and Uruguay – three of which were on Tuesdays

As if this wasn’t enough evidence of Japan’s inevitable victory, it’s been pointed out…

World Cup 2014

13 Jun

The FIFA soccer championship World Cup matches are currently being played in Brazil.

The first game was yesterday.  Home team Brazil beat Croatia, 3-1.

This is the first World Cup with any Japanese referees. Three Japanese referees officiated yesterday’s Brazil – Croatia game.

The games that Japan and the games that America are scheduled to play are here:

Dates / times shown are Brazil time (Japan Standard Time is twelve hours later)

Do you watch the World Cup?

I’ve never been very interested in soccer. I watched a few World Cup games when Japan co-hosted the games with Korea in 2002. I think I’ll give it another try, and watch some of the games that Japan and America play. Maybe I’ll become a soccer fan. 😉
