In Japan, there are many flavors of Kit-Kat.

Last Friday, the world’s first Kit-Kat Store, a store that sells different flavors of Kit-Kat chocolate bars exclusively, opened in Ikebukuro, Tokyo.

Tokyo Five 
We visited this store as well. The queue was long. There were three flavours on offer – sakura green tea, vanilla cheesecake and dark chocolate chilli. I was very taken with the chandelier in the window display that was made up of perspex oblongs with the KitKat logo on, and the small display of KitKat packaging through the ages. They make great presents to bring home, the boxes are very cute.
We had a quick visit to Sunshine 60 – we only went up to the viewing floor, though. Very excitingly for me, there was an exhibition of photographs using the Danboard character from Yotsuba and a Yotsuba shop. We even had our photo taken ‘with’ Yotsuba in a photo booth. People reading this might think I’m about 13. I’m actually 43, ha ha! Maybe next time we’re in Ikebukuro we’ll look around the shopping centre and try the ice cream. Ikebukuro is one of our favourite areas in Tokyo, mainly because we like shopping for records on our trips and there are a few quirky record stores in the area.

Really? I don’t go there too often. I’m more interested in other areas of Tokyo, personally. And, I think there are more used and new CD / record stores in Shibuya and Shinjuku.

Yes there are, also in Shimokitazawa, but there are a couple of quirky ones in Ikebukuro, and the area is less hectic than Shibuya and Shinjuku. At least, it seems that way to us!

Shibuya and Shinjuka have used record stores entirely dedicated to heavy metal (they have stores for other musical genres too)…those are the stores I like!

NICE!! Based on our current economic climate and high taxes here in the U.S., there would never be a cool Kit Kat store opening up anywhere near me… anytime soon. 😦
If anything, stores are downsizing their workforces due to “Obama Care” and many stores like Target are closing down store locations. “Obama Care” has forced employers to pay incredibly high insurance for their employees, due to new government health insurance regulations, which has hit the “bottom line” of employers. It’s a mess over here, Metal Buddy. A complete economic mess.
I continue to admire the diverse marketing of products that takes place in Tokyo. BTW… I love Kit Kats too… I usually only eat them around Halloween, when we buy bags of ’em to give out to trick or treaters. LOL!! 🙂

Speaking of high taxes … when I came to Japan, sales tax was 3% … then it was raised to it’s current 5%.
In April (2014), it will, unfortunately, go up to 8% !
And next year, 10% !

I read about this when one of my friends posted it on his wall. We want to come back to Japan in the worst way. Who knew you could be homesick for a place you visited once?

At this point, just dreaming. Andrea wants to do an exchange program at some point, but we haven’t made any specific plans. We just really, really want to come back again.

Yes, but did you go check the place out? We did. It’s not a store, it’s a counter in the dessert department of the basement and they only sold three kinds of Kit Kat, one of which was sold out. It was not what we thought it would be. We hoped it would have many flavors.

No, I didn’t go. I don’t care enough about junkfood to make a special trip. I rarely go to Ikebukuro either.
In Japan, many department stores rent out corners of their place to other stores … so that Kit-Kat area is considered a shop.
And I heard that they’re starting out with only a few flavors to see how popular the shop will be. If successful, they’ll certainly add more later.

Did you go to Sunshine 60? It’s a huge shopping center with an aquarium, an ice cream store that has unique flavors, etc
