17 Jan

Today (2014 January 17th) is the nineteenth anniversary of the Great Hanshin Earthquake which struck Kobe, Japan on 1995 January 17th.

I wrote a post about it five years ago.

It was the first of two major earthquakes that have struck Japan since I’ve been here … hopefully there won’t be another!

It’s so very scary to think about, but I think Japan is more prepared for the big one than the US is.

Earthquakes are very scary…especially since they strike at anytime with no warning!

All of us who live in “earthquake prone” areas must be prepared.

The Kobe Earthquake struck western Japan on January 17th, 1995…and then two month later, on 1995 March 20th, the Aum Cult terrorized a Tokyo Subway with a Sarin Gas Attack.

I remember both tragic events very well!

Yes please, no more big ones.

Or even small ones! But, yeah, especially not big ones!
      I hate earthquakes!

Were you here during the 2011 March 11th Tohoku ‘quake?

No, we got here last February but I’ve heard stories about that one. Pretty nasty.

I’m Ombudsman for my husband’s command so that means if there’s a disaster I’m the contact between the command leadership and the families. It’s a big responsibility I don’t hope to have to take on but will if needed.

I didn’t know that word “ombudsman”…I looked it up.
Wikipedia said that it’s “a public advocate (who) is usually appointed by the government charged with representing the interests of the public”.

        Sounds like a big responsibility!
