First of all, today (2013 March 26) is the fifth anniversary of my blog.
I wrote the first post on 2008 March 26.
As of today, my blog has gotten about 1,600,000 hits … that averages to about 895 hits per day over the five years – – but that’s not really accurate because my blog averages 1000 hits a day now, but less than 50 a day when I first started it in 2008.

Anyways, I found out about a new movie about post-WW2 Japan titled “Emperor” starring Tommy Lee Jones as U.S. Army General Douglas McArthur.
Do you know who Gen. McArthur was?
He is very well-known in Japan.
General McArthur was in charge of the U.S. military during the war against Japan … and also during the occupation of Japan after the war ended.
Japanese people respect McArthur because he respected the Japanese people.
Tommy Lee Jones is also respected in Japan.
He is known to everyone here as the “face” of Suntory’s Boss Coffee.
In the Boss Coffee TV commerials, Tommy Lee Jones acts and sounds like a Japanese man.
He’s an excellent actor.
Have you seen the movie “Emperor” ?

Yes we did visit other places in Japan–Hokkaido, Izy, Kyoto, Takayama, Kyoto and surrounding areas, Hiroshima, to name a few.
I can’t speak or read Japanese (shame, shame!!) but my husband does…
My oldest was born in the Philippines but grew up there in Tokyo until 3 1/2

Yes we lived in Tokyo the whole time. And no, we weren’t teaching English. My husband worked for an American company that was bought by Anritsu. So he was the American liason over there. My kids are now 14 and 8. I’m trying to write most of my memories in Tokyo but I am having a hard time finding the time and proofreading what I wrote is usually done DAYS or even weeks after everyone had already read it haha! I will follow your blog.

Yes I just saw the Emperor. I thought it could’ve been better, if it was filmed with bigger budget.

My mother has been wanting to see Emperor, but it hasn’t gotten very good reviews. The thought is that Tommy Lee Jones was miscast for the part. I know my mother really respected McArthur.

Gen. McArthur was (technically) my “boss” when I arrived in Japan for the first time. He did indeed treat the Japanese populace with respect and helped them recover from the ravages of war. I too like Tommy Lee Jones and respect his acting ability. The photo you show of his image on a billboard reminds me of the famous (now dead) Japanese actor, Susumu-san (don’t remember is other name). Because my name Mercer was so difficult for the Japanese to pronounce, I (half fecetiously) took the name of Susumu.
