Summer Olympics 2012…so far

30 Jul

Everyone, I’m sure, knows that the 2012 Summer Olympics are underway…and that they games are being hosted by London.

Have you watched the opening ceremonies?
Did you see “James Bond” escort the Queen of England to the games by helicopter…and “the Queen” parachuted in?
And Mr. Bean playing with the orchestra? David Beckham driving a speed boat? And the “legend” himself, Muhammad Ali?

It was a pretty good opening ceremony. I enjoyed watching it (on television…I’ve never seen an Olympics event “in person”. The closest that I came was when my wife and I took the 新幹線 (bullet train) to 長野 (Nagano, Japan) in 1998 to see the “Olympic city” atmosphere).

Anyways, are you watching any of the games?
Which events do you like best?

Last night, I watched Japan “almost” get gold in men’s judo…but lost to Georgia.

So far, the top three countries with medals won are China, America, and Italy.

Japan is currently in 15th place.

Oh yes! You bet I’m watching! My favorite during the Opening ceremonies was the Queen with James Bond. what a good sport she is! The Japanese must be thrilled with Kohei Uchimura.

Yeah, the Queen parachuted into the arena! 😉

Uchimura-san is amazing to watch! And he got Japan’s first gold of these Olympics.
He mentioned once that he’s fond of an inexpensive chocolate called “Black Thunder”… after that, sales of that chocolate took off!

Missed the opening, but I’ve been picking up events here and there. Coverage here has finally evolved to the point that we’re not on a diet of only events the US is supposed to win. Do you a spectrum of events or just the “home team”?

As with probably every country, Japanese TV usually only shows Olympic events that at least one Japanese athlete is competing in (of course, they show the entire event…not only when there is a Japanese athlete performing).

I think there are so many events, it’s impractical to do otherwise.

I remember when the Soviet Union used to dominate the medals. Now it’s China. Too bad for Michael Phelps. Hopefully, he wins 2 more medals and breaks the record of the athlete having the most medals of all. Yes, I have been watching the Olympics off and on and did take in most of the Opening Ceremony.

But it’s always the big countries with a lot of money and a lot of athletes which dominate the Olympics … the very small countries with only a few athletes feel happy if they can get even one medal.
