Towers and skyscrapers around the world will be illuminated in white and red to show their country’s support for Japan’s recovery from the disaster of 2011 March 11.
At sunset tonight (Monday, 2011 April 4) in each country’s local time, the Empire State Building in New York City, America, the Sky Tower in New Zealand, the Menara Kuala Lumpur Tower in Malayasia, the North Tower in South Korea, the CN Tower in Canada, the Macau Tower in China, the John Hancock Observatory in America and the Spinnaker Tower in England will all be lit up in the colors of the Japanese flag.

really? i was there, on the top of Empire State Building 3 months ago. anyway, your blog is still amazing. i commented on your blog for the 1st time when i was in high school, i asked u about hirotada ototake stuff and your new turtle. im in your native country now, in the USA and you’re in my native continent, Asia. my deep condolence for the Japan tsunami & earthquake victims. glad to know that tokyo5’s admin is fine in Tokyo. 🙂

I wonder how can ‘showing their country’s support for Japan’s recovery’ by lighting up ‘in the colors of the Japanese flag’ really(practically) help the Japanese?
Isn’t it better to save that money(which will be spent on lighting)and send in Japan?
ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS(In this case louder than showing off support)…

Well, I suppose that since they’re going to illuminate these towers and skyscrapers anyways, having them in these colors is only meant as a sign of alliance.

I lived in the Chicago area for 35 years. My daughter and her family live there now. I’ll have to tell her about the Hancock Tower. I thought it would be the Sears/Willis Tower that would be lit up. However, the Hancock would be easier to see.

The Sears/Willis Tower used to be the tallest building in the world and is usually the building that people go to see. I like the Hancock though since it’s the first building that makes an impression on you when you enter Chicago from the north.

I think that since Sears Tower is black, it would be a bit difficult to see the red and white.

I just learned the reason that the John Hancock Center is being illuminated for Japan and the Sears Tower isn’t…the towers and buildings that are doing this special illumination are all towers in the World Federation Of Great Towers.
These towers decided to do this together.
The Sears Tower isn’t one of these towers.
The Tokyo Tower is one of the World Federation Of Great Towers but it isn’t joining the red and white illumination because the Tokyo Tower has stopped being illuminated since the Fukushima Nuclear Plant disaster to help conserve electricity.
