Top news stories of 2010

11 Dec

It’s almost 2011. It seems that 2010 just flew by! But maybe it only feels that way because I’m getting older. 😉
What would you say were the biggest news stories of 2010?
Which stories were covered by the news media extensively where you live? Which stories affected you the most?

As for me, I think I’d say that 2010’s biggest headlines were:

  • North Korea attacked South Korea in November 2010.
I live in Japan and Korea is the nearest country to us. So if the Korean War were to restart, it could affect Japan.

Norea Korea bombed South Korea, Nov. 2010
  • Haiti Earthquake
On 2010 January 12, a major earthquake struck the country of Haiti. Over 90,000 people died.
Japan is an earthquake-prone country. I think they are the worst of the natural disasters since they can strike anytime without warning.

  • Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico
In April 2010, a major oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico caused over 4 million barrels of oil to pollute the water and cause immense damage to the eco-system.
I grew up on the Gulf coast of Florida.

Which news stories do you think were 2010’s biggest?

There are many big news stories around the world in 2010 (probably true every year). Certainly, the 3 you mentioned are significant. Others may be the Chilean mine work rescue and the recent Wikileaks scandal were/are also big international stories in 2010.

You’re right. I can’t believe I forgot to mention the mine rescue in Chile in this post. I did mention it in another post.

And the Wikileaks scandal was mentioned already in an earlier comment.

I agree with RattRocker you have hit the nail on the head but may I also add the IMF coming to Ireland and the EU also helping. We’re stuck in a recession and are, it seems getting a bailout. And the budget here being the most harsh ever. Those were definately top news over here at least.

Maybe it was a big story there but I don’t recall hearing about that ever before.

Yes I guess it wouldn’t be shown on the Japanese news. It was shown in Europe but I think it was mostly only top news in Ireland and not international stuff.

I think you hit the nail right on the head, besides the ongoing news from wikileaks that is causing trouble.

Oh yeah, how could I forget the “Wikileaks” scandal?! That was a big story.

I’ve never even looked at that website (Wikileaks). Have you?

Eh I ahve looked at it once or twice, the guy who started it is in jail right now, he was expressing free speech but he was also putting our country in danger, even if the US had stuff to cover up, it could start a war, apparently the US has an agreement with some country bordering russia to let US ships in if Russia is goign to start a war or somethign which ahs them pissed off because that shows the US doesn’t fully trust them, so it is a huge mess, I don’t know what to think, he was using freedom of speech but how he gained the information is another thing.

        >the guy who started it is in jail right now

I believe he turned himself in to the police to face charges unrelated to the Wikileaks scandal.

I would put the massive American election upset. The biggest switch in power in over 60 years.

The election of U.S. President Obama was international news. But more minor elections in any country as usually only domestic news.
