Top 5

If you had to choose your five favorite movies and five favorite music albums (CDs) of all time…what would they be?
No pondering it for a long time…just off the top of your head write them in the comment section of this post.

As for me, I think I’d choose:

“The Hangover” and “Gladiator” were good…but I don’t think I’d put them as the “Top Five”.

I don’t know “Never Back Down”.

And I don’t like either “Troy” or “Lord Of The Rings”, personally.

Not much a fan of Hollywood (the movies from the 80s were good though) so my favourite movies are all Japanese:

    – 全然大丈夫 (Fine, Totally Fine)
    -転々 (Adrift in Tokyo)
    -Swing Girls
    -Water Boys
    -Survive Style 5+

    Music:

The Ataris – Blue Skies, Broken Hearts… Next 12 Exits
    Jimmy Eat World – Clarity
Death Cab For Cutie – Plans
    Alexisonfire – Crisis
Base Ball Bear – 十七歳 (‘Juu nana sai’ – 17 years old)

I don’t know any of that music you listed.

And I watch Japanese movies often…but the only ones on your list that I watched are “Water Boys“…which was alright, in my opinion…and “Swing Girls“…which is good.

Movies: What Dreams May Come, Fight Club, Seven Pounds, Good Will Hunting, Last Life in The Universe. And Bands: Everclear, Fiona Apple, Chiodos, Senses Fail, Nine Inch Nails (Halo 18 or older) Yeah, wide range, I know. Quality of Script and Lyrics is more important than a particular genre. That’s why.

      >Movies:
      >What Dreams May Come

      I don’t know this one.

      >Fight Club

      It’s cool!

      >Seven Pounds

I haven’t watched it. It didn’t look interesting in the previews.

      >Good Will Hunting

I’d rate this one as “average”. Sorry (just my opinion, though).

      >Last Life in The Universe

I don’t know this one, either.

      >And Bands

      Kinda cheating. 😉
      Supposed to be five albums.

      > Everclear, Fiona Apple, Chiodos, Senses Fail, Nine Inch Nails

I don’t know Chiodos or Senses Fail.
And I haven’t heard but a song or two from each of the others.

      >Quality of Script and Lyrics is more important than a particular genre. That’s why.

I try to be open-minded about music and movies…but in the end, I like what I like—loud, noisy music and movies. 😉

    MOVIES
    Star Wars
    Back to the Future
    First Blood
    Die Hard
    Predator

    MUSIC
    GNR – Chinese Democracy
    Bon Jovi – New Jersey
    Marvelous 3 – ReadySexGo
    Def Leppard -Pyromania
    KISS – s/t

It’s tough narrowing it down to just 5 for each!

      Thanks for commenting.
I look at your blog often…so I already know you have excellent taste in music!

      >MOVIES
      >Star Wars
      >Die Hard

      I chose these two, also!

      >Back to the Future
      >First Blood

I actually considered adding these two!

      >Predator

It’s good. But I think that “Terminator” is better.

      >MUSIC
      >GNR – Chinese Democracy

I haven’t heard this album yet. Is it better than “Appetite For Destruction“? I’d better check it out!

      >Bon Jovi – New Jersey

Well, I think this is their worst album!
I like the under-rated “These Days” album by them better. (As well as their first two albums).

      >Marvelous 3 – ReadySexGo

      Never heard of them.

      >Def Leppard -Pyromania
      >KISS – s/t

      Great, both!

      >It’s tough narrowing it down to just 5 for each!

Yes. But the idea was to write the first five of each that you thought of…(that you like).

    My Fair Lady
    Breakfast at Tiffany’s
    Gone with the Wind
    Sleepless in Seattle

    Music:

Regarding your first four movie choices, they’re all classics…but I haven’t seen any of them, except “The Sound Of Music“.
And I like that movie! It’s a nice story.

I don’t like “Sleepless In Seattle” though. Not my style. (And as I mentioned above, regarding “You’ve Got Mail“, I’m not much of a Tom Hanks or Meg Ryan fan. They each have a couple good movies…but not many, in my opinion).

Honestly, I don’t know very much about the musicians you listed.
But I don’t care for the music of 「小野ヨーコ」 (Yoko Ono)…but John Lennon, he’s a legend!

      >007 (pierce brosnan)

I agree. The James Bond movies with him were good. (I think Daniel Craig is good too).

      >魔女の宅急便

I like Ghibli movies too. I think 「千と千尋の神隠し」 is great.

      >The notebook

      I don’t know this movie.

      >Casablanca

      It’s a classic…but actually I’ve never watched it.

      >You’ve Got Mail

Not my style. (And I think both Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are overrated.)

      As for your music choices…
I like The Beatles and Queen, but not David Bowie or ABBA.
And I don’t know Josh Groban.

I know. They should revoke my “metal card”. I can appreciate some of their hits, but just never got into them for some reason. I’m not saying I HATE them.

And somehow I did know that the Megadeth guy lives in Tokyo…maybe you’ve mentioned it before on your site.

Maybe I did mention before that Marty Friedman moved here a few years back. He speaks Japanese quite well.
And occasionally guests on TV (in music-related programs).

Paul Gilbert (of “Mr. Big”) also has a Japanese wife.
He also moved to Tokyo a couple years ago to try to learn Japanese.
It seems, though, that he found it too difficult and moved back to America.

    No fair…you said 5 only!

(Although I will give you the Metallica and Megadeth…both quite good. I know it’s heresy to say, but I have never really like Judas Priest.)

      That’s why I said “If I could choose more…” 😉

      You don’t like Judas Priest?
I like both the “Halford” and “Ripper Owens” versions of Priest!
I saw their “Reunion / Retribution” tour in Yokohama.
Rob brought the Harley onstage. Can’t get more “metal” than that!

And, speaking of Megadeth, did you know that former member Marty Friedman lives in Tokyo with his Japanese wife?

If I could add more music, I’d add:
    Judas Priest “Metal Works”
    Metallica “Master Of Puppets”
    and
    Megadeth “Countdown To Extinction”
    cuz they’re masterpieces too!

If I could add more movies…
    Fargo,
    Star Wars (the first one),
    Terminator,
    and
    the Japanese movie “Quill“.

    Album:
Too Much Joy – Son of Sam I Am
KISS – Ace Frehley solo album
    Allison Krause – Greatest Hits
KISS – Lick It Up (overall I think it’s their most consistent album from start to finish)
Lizards From Afar – Bloomington Democracy

      Caddyshack and Fletch?
Those were “okay”, in my opinion.
I don’t know Saving Silverman or Brazil.

Of course, in Japan, Hollywood movies often get different titles.

I don’t know if they’re “Marvel”, “DC” or another…but I thought the most recent Batman and the first Punisher were pretty good.

I have never heard Too Much Joy or Allison Krause…but I agree that the other three are good!

    – The Hangover
    – SAW + sequels
    – Ice Age 3
    – Becoming Jane
    – Meet the Robinsons

    Music
    – Kobukuro; most of their songs. And since they’re the only ones I’ve been listening to for the past couple of weeks, no other pops to mind. -_-

      Re: your movie choices…
The Hangover was funny. I think “Planes, Trains & Automobiles” and “Shaun Of The Dead” are funnier.
      Have you seen them?

I don’t like movies such as “Saw“, personally.
To me, Jaws is a good horror movie.

I haven’t seen “Ice Age 2” and I didn’t know there was a part III.

I never heard of the other two.

      Re: your music…

      I have Kobukuro “Greatest Hits”.
      Do you like Japanese music?
Have you heard SMAP, Southern All Stars, or Monkey Majik?
