As I mentioned last month, KISS is scheduled to finally release a new album soon. (Click here to see that post).
Well, according to the “Heavy Metal Addiction” website, the rumors are true.
KISS have announced that the name of the new album is “Sonic Boom” and it will be released in the U.S. on 2009 October 6 (the date that it will be released in Japan hasn’t been announced yet).
It will contain two CDs and a DVD of a live show. One of the CDs will be the songs from the Japan-only release 「地獄列伝」 (“Hell’s Biography“).

And the other CD will contain eleven new songs. The new song titles will be:
- Modern Day Delilah
- Russian Roulette
- Never Enough
- Yes I Know (Nobody’s Perfect)
- Stand
- Hot & Cold
- All For The Glory
- Danger Us
- I’m An Animal
- When Lightning Strikes
- Say Yeah

I had high hopes for the CD…but ended up giving it away after 3 listens.
Wolfgang is indeed in the band as the new bass player. Originally they even went so far as to Photoshop Anthony out of all the historic photos and album covers on the VH website. Fans raised so much hell they reverted back to the unaltered versions.
Now THAT’S out of line.

What would make them think that that would be an OK thing to do??
I just looked at the Van Halen website. They list Wolfgang Van Halen as the bassist.
His bass guitar is the exact same design as his father’s famous red “striped” six-stringer.

Modern Day Delilah = Awesome…I love it
Chickenfoot = Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani & Chad Smith. It’s a Supergroup that was supposed to be the “next” Van Halen…since Van Halen hasn’t put out anything in the last 10 years. Musically it’s played beautifully, but the songs themselves just aren’t interesting.

Oh yeah, I saw an ad for this band’s album in the Japanese metal magazine “Burrrn!”.

I heard Michael Anthony got kicked out of Van Halen to make room for Eddie Van Halen’s son, Wolfgang, who plays bass!
If that’s true…it’s out of line!
And that’s why he teamed up with ex-Van Halen vocalist Sammy Hagar.

I didn’t discover Circus until I was older. I’m from a small town and the drug store didn’t carry it. (Who knows why…they carried Kerrang which I think was a British publication.)
I worked part time jobs growing up so that I could buy a new “album” every week. I also started with vinyl, but quickly turned to cassettes when I was about 13. I stuck with cassettes until about 1995 when it was just inevitable that CDs would take over.
Now I just download most of the time to get the 1 or 2 songs I like…unless it is a band I love or think I will love.
(Recently bought Chickenfoot on CD and was SORELY disappointed.)

I remember hanging out at the drug store magazine rack reading Kerrang and Metal Edge to try and find ANY kind of news on my favorite bands.
(Rolling Stone of course rarely carried news/reviews on KISS unless they were negative.)

I had a subscription to Metal Edge.
And I used to look at Circus magazine too.
I bought quite alot of LPs when I was a teenager.
(Even after cassettes became popular I continued buying 12″ LPs. And I copied many of my records onto cassette so I could listen to them in my car’s tape player).
I bought my first CD player just before I came to Japan in 1990.
These days, I don’t listen to music as much as I used to. And I seldom buy CDs anymore.
Now I have teenage kids. They each have a big collection of music on their MP3 players!

I’ve heard it, but only through my crappy laptop built-in speakers.
I think it’s very encouraging…but I will reserve judgment until I can hear the entire song/album.

The times have changed. In this “Information Age”, young people today don’t know what anticipation is. Like when we were younger, no one knew what an album’s cover would look like or how the songs would sound until the album was in the stores.

I think Pyscho Circus (the song) is just mediocre…for the song that was the cornerstone of an album/tour/comic book/video game, you’d think it’d be better.
I Pledge Allegiance I like because it’s so ridiculous. I’m not sure if it’s a good song, but it’s so silly that I like it.
Into The Void I like strictly because it’s the only album IMO that actually sounds like classic KISS…like it could’ve come off of Love Gun. Plus, it’s the only one I think Peter actually plays on. (At least it sounds like it to me.)

Psycho Circus has a few good tunes on it…it also has a few that I think are just awful:

Also, as a drummer and a Peter Criss fan, I was disappointed from the first listen of the CD realizing almost instantly that it wasn’t Peter playing.

Actually, to me, those songs you listed aren’t bad.
It’s “Psycho Circus” (the title track) and “I Pledge Allegiance To The State Of Rock And Roll” (what a title!?) and “Into The Void” that are the worst on that album.

Actually I would like to know the CD’s release date in Japan.
And what does it mean when it says on kissonline that this CD will be released in the U.S. exclusively through Wal-Mart?
Only one store in the U.S. will sell the CD?
I’ve never heard of that before! Has it become common in the U.S.?

I haven’t been this excited for an album since Psycho Circus…but that album I was quickly crestfallen.

And Psycho Circus was released 11 years ago.
Actually, Psycho Circus isn’t KISS’ best work…but it’s not bad.
