Commemorative coins

12 Aug

As I mentioned in an earlier post (Click here to read it), this year (2009) is the twentieth anniversary of the date that the current Japanese emperor took the throne.
The Emperor and Empress’ 50th wedding anniversary was also this year.

So to mark the occasion, two commemorative coins will go on sale from the Bank Of Japan this November.

These coins are a special gold ¥10,000 coin and a special silver ¥500 coin.

The price to purchase the coins will be ¥80,000 (about US$800) for the ¥10,000 coin or ¥82,000 (about US$820) for both coins.

I have a few mint commemorative Japanese coins for various occasions…but ¥80,000 is too steep a price for a coin in my opinion. If they sell the ¥500 coin alone, maybe I’ll buy one…but not the ¥10,000 coin.

I know very little about investing in coins. My father did so much investing and now I wish I listened to him and showed more of interest in it. It’s too late now, regretably.
How much do you know about it?
I do remember that your father-in-law invested in coins too. I will never forget how quickly they seemed to connect with each other the first time they met. especially since neither of them knew the other’s language and that did make it difficult for them.
bty, I did finally some gifts for the girls. I sent each a card with some cash in it so they could pick out something for themselves from Dad and me. They said it would arrive in Tokyo in about 10 days-give or take a day. They also asked for your phone # so maybe they will call to make sure you are home before they get it to you-I don’t know that for sure.
I like the name, Boss. It’s very cute. I’m glad you are all enjoying your new pet but I don’t think I would ever want to pet him or hold him, no offense intended. I just get a crawly feeling when I just think of him. I’ll stick w/ a dog or cat for a pet.

I don’t know alot about coin collecting. I have a few mint sets though.

We’ll look for the cards. Thanks.

And you should get a pet beetle! They’re cute.

When I first started reading this I was going to ask you to send me one for my nephew. (I have been getting him collectible coins since he was born 10 years ago…he has a heckuva collection now.)

    However…$800! YIKES!!
For Christmas I got him one once that was worth almost $200, but that’s about the extent of my generosity.

Yes, these are special one pressing only coins.

If you want, you could get him a pressing of each of the Japanese coins. They are sold every year to collectors as mint coins in a special case.
One of each coin in the Japanese currency…and a special coin that isn’t currency but shows the year in the Chinese zodiac.

They sell domestically (in Japan) for about ¥1700 (US$17).
      Much more affordable.

Yeah, I’m sure he would have.
My father-in-law also collects coins, I’m sure you remember. I think he’s gonna get these coins.

Yes, it’s a collage of photos from around the Tokyo area that I took.

      >that beetle looks kind of creepy to me but I bet your kids love it. have they named it?

You mean the beetle that I show in this post:

He’s not “creepy”. Very cute. 🙂
      My kids named him “Boss“.
