梅雨

10 Jun

Today is the official first day of 梅雨 (the rainy season) in Tokyo.

It didn’t rain at all today, though.
It is forecast to rain tomorrow in Tokyo…but not the rest of the week.

Weather forecast for 2009 June 11 - 17.

Weather forecast for 2009 June 11 - 17.

The rainy season in Japan starts this time of year (mid-June) and lasts a few weeks.
北海道 (Hokkaido (Japan’s northernmost island)) doesn’t have a 梅雨 (rainy season).

Here in Phoenix we do actually have monsoons. We get very hard rain and strong winds. Occasionally Arizona will actually get nailed by hurricanes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arizona_hurricanes).

Well, that wasn’t my image of Arizona!
I imagined it as a very hot, dry desert.

I’ve never been there, so I wouldn’t know, though.

I thought “monsoon” was an Indian* word for 「梅雨」 (rainy season).

(*”Indian” as in from the country of India…not “Native American”.)

Does the U.S. have “monsoons” too?

It had been beautiful weather for the past few days in Tokyo…but it’s raining right now. 😦

No, no rainy season there at all.
Of course it rains in Hokkaido. There are many farms there…they need rain.

But Hokkaido is the only part of Japan with no 梅雨 (rainy season).

Konnichiwa! I hate the rainy weather. I love warm sunny days. It is pretty dry here in summer in New York except for thunderstorms.

      >Konnichiwa!

Oh, can you speak some Japanese?
      How did you learn?

      >I hate the rainy weather. I love warm sunny days.

      I guess everyone does.

Actually, it only rained for a little while in Tokyo today…then it became very nice and sunny.

Are you from NYC? I’ve visited that city once about 14 years ago. It was fun.

Are there thunderstorms in New York often?
Thankfully, it’s rare in Tokyo (I used to live in Florida when I was young…Florida has thunderstorms often).
