ラーメン・ガール

24 May

First of all, today is my mother’s birthday. So…Happy birthday, Mom.

Yesterday, I watched the movie 「ラーメン・ガール」 (“The Ramen Girl“).

Have you ever seen this movie?

It’s not bad. It’s much better than that other Tokyo-related but over-rated 「ロスト・イン・トランスレーション」 (“Lost In Translation“)!

A boring movie....

A boring movie....

The movie “Lost In Translation” is about an American woman who follows her boyfriend to Tokyo when his work sends him here and he is too busy to spend time with her so meets another American who is working in Tokyo and just as lonely as she is.

If you haven’t seen it…don’t bother. It’s painfully boring.

The movie “The Ramen Girl“, though not great, is a much better movie than “Lost In Translation“.
Ironically, it has some similarities in the story.
An American woman follows her boyfriend to Tokyo when his work sends him here in this story, too. He decides she’s cramping his style and he moves to Osaka without her.
She becomes depressed and lonely and one night has a bowl of ラーメン (Ramen*) at a nearby Ramen shop that are all over Japan.
(* Real ramen. Not the instant type that is cheaply sold in supermarkets. It’s quite different.)

She falls in love with Ramen and decides she wants the Ramen chef to allow her to become his apprentice. Which is grudgingly agrees to…even though she can’t speak any Japanese and he can’t speak English.

It takes her awhile to understand that, in Japan, that a student is expected to take his role seriously and follow everything his teacher says…without question.
(Much the same lesson that “Daniel” learned in the movie 「ベスト・キッド」 (“The Karate Kid“).)

The movie 「ラーメン・ガール」 (“The Ramen Girl“) definitely wasn’t the best movie I’ve ever seen. But it was fun. It had parts that over-simplified or stereotyped Japan…but it also showed Tokyo better than alot of other overseas movies do. They even showed the Yokohama Ramen Museum briefly.

I read in the news today that the actress that was in “Ramen Girl” just died.

She was only in her early 30’s.

    Hi Tokyo5,

i was wondering whether you have the OST for the Ramen Girl movie? i have watched it & the only thing i like about the movie was the musics played inside. It gives the touch of Japanese life into western song. it would be grateful if you have it. i have googled it all over and with no success..

    Thanks,

No, sorry. I don’t have the soundtrack for the “Ramen Girl” movie.

I don’t even remember what the music sounded like. I doubt it was my style, though.

Soundtracks that I have enjoyed are for the movies:
      Maximum Overdrive“,
      Shocker“,
      Pet Semetary“,
      Detroit Rock City“,
      Detroit Metal City“,
      Last Action Hero“,
      and others like that.

Lost in Translation is a beautiful movie, all aspects are gorgeous. K.K. Barrett and Mayumi Tomita have done an really good job on decoration and Lance Acord (director of photography) is simply brilliant ! What about the distribution ? Bill Murray sign is best perfomance and
    Scarlett Johansson is captivating.

With a good screenplay and a great realization, Sofia Coppola signed one of her best movie (with Virgin suicides, Marie-Antoinette)

Boring ? Are you kidding ?!

Did you really like that movie?
I can’t understand how…but everyone has their own taste, I guess.

      >Sofia Coppola signed one of her best movie (with Virgin suicides, Marie-Antoinette)

Lost In Translation may very well be her best movie…but that doesn’t mean it’s a good movie.
“The Virgin Suicides” and “Marie-Antoinette” were terrible too!

      >Boring ? Are you kidding ?!

No, I’m serious. It was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen! Painfully boring!

And it didn’t show Tokyo accurately either.

It’s just my opinion, of course.

I looked at your site. You live in New York and you like Japan…is that right?
      Have you ever visited Japan?

Don’t see Angels and Demons if you think Da Vinci Code is overrated. I just saw it last weekend with my son – it was just ok I thought.

Reading your list of movies, I was absolutely disappointed with the DaVinci Code movie and sadly Lord of The Rings, having read the book I expected that they would stick to the originality of it. Fargo is absolutely BRILLIANT to watch ..Shaun of the Dead ..what can I say it cracks me up..brilliant story line ..in fact I watched it last Sunday night.Planes, Trains and Automobiles ..what can i say to that, if its a Steve Martin and John Candy movie I am always guaranteed 5 giganticus boxes of popcorns with melted butter and caramel to snack on while staying rooted to the telly. Ive not watched Kiss of the Dragon tho ..

Other great, under-rated movies are: One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (starring Jack Nicholson, Danny DeVito and Christopher Lloyd) / Cool Hand Luke (starring Paul Newman) / and Absolute Power (starring Clint Eastwood and Gene Hackman).

I don’t like those boring artsy films!
Somehow though, they often get good reviews by critics.

      Overrated:
Lost In Translation“, “Forrest Gump“, “Lord Of The Rings“, and “DaVinci Code“.

      Underrated:
Planes, Trains and Automobiles“, “Fargo“, “Sean Of The Dead“, and “Kiss Of The Dragon“.

Good idea. It’s a waste of time.

I’ve heard of it…but had never watched it.

      >but this season’s AI Finale had KISS perform

Thanks for telling me about it! 🙂
They did a medley of “Beth“, Detroit Rock City“, and “Rock And Roll All Night“.

Yep, it was great to watch KISS perform and I knew the AI contestant Adam Lambert will perform with them…although I was sort of hoping he would perform with Led Zep because his voice is mind blowing and it totally reminds me of Robert Plant.
