Stuff.co.nz has a so-called list of “MTV’s Greatest Album Ever Top 20” on their site.
Number one on their list is “Thriller” by Michael Jackson!
I not a Michael Jackson fan by a long-shot! I dislike him and his music. I think that “Thriller” album is way over-rated!
Their list also includes albums such as “OK Computer” by Radiohead. They’re even worse than Michael Jackson!
In fact, every single album on their list is a waste of vinyl, in my opinion…except one: they have “Appetite For Destruction” by Guns ‘N Roses listed as number three.
“Appetite For Destruction” is a great album!
I couldn’t believe, though, that they put a list of the Top 20 Greatest Albums Ever and included those other nineteen albums!
But after I re-read the article, I noticed it says “…votes were cast by fans asked to choose their favorite album since 1981 from a shortlist of 26 LPs.”
So, their list is basically meaningless (and so wrong!).
That made me do a search for a better list of the best albums of all time.
I found a list of the Best 500 Albums Of All Time.
It’s better…but KISS doesn’t appear of it even once! (And they have that awful Radiohead as number one! Motörhead ♠ or Diamondhead would’ve been better!)
So, I decided I should put online an accurate list of the best albums.
Here it is…the Best Twenty Albums Of All Time:
- KISS (their debut album). Eight out of the ten songs on this album are classics! How many other albums have 80% of the songs that are concert staples for decades?
- AC/DC : Back In Black.
- KISS : Alive II. When I was about eight-years-old, this is the first KISS album I ever saw. It made an impression on me.
- Mötley Crüe : Shout At The Devil. The epitome of ’80s heavy metal.
- Guns ‘N Roses : Appetite For Destruction. The only album from MTV’s list that belongs on a Top 20 list!
- Jackyl (their debut album). The lead singer plays the chainsaw! That’s rock ‘n roll!
- Def Leppard : Pyromania. The last decent album by this band! I saw them in concert after the drummer lost his arm in an accident and began drumming with one arm!
- Megadeth : Countdown To Extinction.
- Metallica (the black album. (Should be titled: “Don’t Tread On Me” because of the cover)). All of Metallica‘s albums up to this one are great! Don’t know what happened to them after they cut their hair though!)
- Ozzy Osbourne : Blizzard Of Ozz. Ozzy is the Godfather of Metal. I love all of his albums…but this one is best!
- Judas Priest : Defenders Of The Faith.
- Queensrÿche : Operation:Mindcrime. This album is a masterpiece! I usually don’t like concept albums…but this is the rare great concept-album!
- Quiet Riot : Metal Health. Every metal-head bought this album in 1983!
- RATT : Out Of The Cellar.
- Black Sabbath : Master Of Reality. Any Black Sabbath album is great!
- Savatage : Hall Of The Mountain King. By far their best album.
- Scorpions : Love At First Sting.
- Twisted Sister : Stay Hungry. Did you know that they dedicated this 1984 album to Arnold Schwarzenegger?
- Skid Row (their debut album). The song “Youth Gone Wild” is the perfect metal anthem.
- Dangerous Toys (their debut album).
What do you think of my list? Have you ever listened to any of these albums? Do you own them? Do you like them?

With the exception of Guns ‘N Roses “Appetite For Destruction” and Black Sabbath “Sabotage” (both of which are great!), I’ve never heard any of those other albums on your list.
It appears to be a wide variety of musical genres. What type of music do you mainly listen to?

5. Judas Priest – Screaming For vengeance

All great albums (except for The Who. I don’t care for their music much.), and many I can understand being in a “Top 20” list—namely “Ride The Lightning” (the first Metallica album I ever heard), “Screaming For Vengeance”, “Holy Diver”…and of course the albums you listed that are on my list as well.
But some of the others aren’t quite “Top 20” level, in my opinion. Namely, “Slippery When Wet”, “Dancing Undercover” and “Look What The Cat Dragged In”.

I’d make a top twenty list of all time but that is too difficult. I do know what albums I would consider for a top twenty and what I wouldn’t as well as. I’ll list 20 of my favorite albums that I’d consider for a “Top Twenty” list.
-Van Halen – Women and Children First
-Megadeth – So Far, So Good… So What!
-Metallica – Ride the Lightning
-Judas Priest – Defenders of the Faith
-Iron Maiden – Somewhere In Time
-Black Sabbath – Mob Rules
-Dio – The Last In Line
-Dokken – Tooth and Nail
-Queensrÿche – Operation: Mindcrime
-Metal Church – Metal Church
-Def Leppard – High ‘n’ Dry
-Led Zeppelin – Led Zeppelin
-Anthrax – Spreading the Disease
-Ratt – Detonator
-Pink Floyd – The Wall
-Bon Jovi – New Jersey
-Sammy Hagar – Standing Hampton
-Great White – Hooked
-Scorpions – Blackout
-Triumph – Allied Forces
Most of these are off the top of my head and I am sure there are many missing from a candidates list and many missing from my favorites list. I am also sure many would argue against certain albums from here, but then again, these are just my favorites. Who am I to deem what are the greatest albums of all time?
Y’know, I think I’ll save this topic for one of my next blog posts as I still have a whole lot to say on this 😛

Those are great albums … many are on my list as well.
But … in my opinion…
Black Sabbath isn’t Black Sabbath without Ozzy,
Pink Floyd, Bon-Jovi, Great White and Triumph have some good songs but I wouldn’t consider them “essential”.
I can’t believe you have no Ozzy Osbourne or KISS on your list!
LikeLike
Hehe, these are just some of my favorite artists that I did off the top of my head, a full list of just qualifiers would have Ozzy, KISS, Aerosmith, and other bands not on here as well.
As for Black Sabbath, I was first exposed to the Ozzy Sabbath but I fell in love with Dio Sabbath, in particular the live album Live Evil. I didn’t grow up with just Ozzy at the helm and I knew there were other singers aside from Ozzy and Dio. Don’t worry though, my second favorite Black Sabbath studio album is Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and that one would also make it to my “qualifiers” for the top 20.

Actually, my list is also off-the-top-of-my head and in-no-particular-order (except as I thought of them), too.
>-Marvelous 3 – ReadySexGo
Never heard of this band.
>Megadeth – Youthanasia
More than “Countdown“??
>-Judas Priest – Painkiller
It’s a great album! “A Touch Of Evil” is an excellent track!
I chose the Priest album “Defenders Of The Faith“…but if I re-did that list, I might choose their album “Metal Works” (except that album doesn’t have the songs “Johnny B. Goode” and “Some Heads Are Gonna Roll“).
>-GNR – Chinese Democracy
Is it a good album? I haven’t heard it yet.
>-KISS – Creatures of the Night
I wanted it add one more album to my list actually…KISS “Revenge“.
>-Bon Jovi – New Jersey
“New Jersey“??
If I chose a Bon Jovi album, it’d be “These Days“.
>-Metallica – Master of Puppets
Maybe I should’ve chose that one over their Black album too…when it first came out, it was on my turntable constantly (I used to buy vinyl LPs!).
>-Dirty Looks – Cool from the Wire
The only album I own by them is their debut. Personally I think it’s “so-so”.
>-L.A. Guns – Waking the Dead
I bought their first four albums…then haven’t thought about them in years. Is that one good?
>-Warrant – Cherry Pie
Warrant?? If I chose one of theirs, it’d be “Dog Eat Dog“.
>-Aerosmith – Toys in the Attic
This was the first Aerosmith album I ever owned. My uncle gave it to me when I was about 9.
>-Edguy – Rocket Ride
I haven’t heard this band’s music. Maybe I’ll check them out.
>-Alice Cooper – Trash
Definitely his most popular album.

You are quite wild.
Is your heart burning hot with fiery metal?
Yes, Heavy Metal is probably the most energetic and sexiest music in the world.
But as you say in “Japanese Proverbs,” a person’s liking is 十人十色 (Juhnin Toiro) which means a different person has a different taste.
As you fell in love with KISS when you’re 8, I fell into raptures with a Japanese songstress.
And I’m sure that everyone has his or her own love-at-first-sight song.
My first song is THIS.
太田裕美 九月の雨
Do you know Japanese songs?
When it comes to Heavy Metal, I know nothing about it.
But I gave it a try and made a list of the too-dangerous-to-handle genre, making a wild guess.
Take a look and enjoy a layman’s struggle.
1 Black Sabbath Paranoid
2 Iron Maiden Number of the Beast
3 Metallica Master of Puppets
4 KISS AliveⅡ
5 Van Halen Van Halen
6 AC/DC Back in Black
7 Bon Jovi Cross Road
8 Judas Priest British Steel
9 Led Zeppelin Physical Graffity
10 Ozzy Osbourne Blizzard of Oz
11 Guns ‘N’ Roses Appetite for Destruction
12 Def Leppard Pyromania
13 Motley Crue Shout at the Devil
14 Scorpions Blackout
15 Megadeth Rust in Peace
16 Rainbow Rainbow Rising
17 Deep Purple Machine Head
18 Slayer Reign in Blood
19 Dio Holy Diver
20 Motorhead Ace of Spades
Is Bon Jovi a metal ?
Please correct the list and teach us what is good and what is not.
I’m 53 years young (I’m not old )
And the songs I remember and I think are good ones are…
ABBA Dancing Queen
Eagles Hotel California
Olivia Newton John Physical
Albert Hammond It Never Rains in Southern California
Gloria Gaynor I Will Survive
John Denver Country Roads
Quincy Jones Ai No Corrida
Michael Jackson Rock With You
The Nolans I’m in the Mood for Dancing
You know, Tokyo 5.
The Japanese people love The Beatles and Carpenters.
And they like Michael Jackson, too.
It’s true that Thriller is overrated.
But is there any reason why you dislike Michael ?
You are right.
He did cosmetic surgery more than 50 times.
And I was horrified when I saw him covered in a black veil to prevent people from looking at his face.
But I seem to know how he feels.
Asking him why he does strange things is just asking a person whether he can understand how it feels to be blind.
If you don’t know how it feels to be blind, you will never be able to understand how Michael feels deep inside.
His heart is blind and he doesn’t know how to express his true feelings.
I think Michael is quite misunderstood and people should try to figure out what a black person wants to do.
But on the other hand, I believe that Michael, instead of trying to whiten his face, should at least spend some of the money wasted on plastic surgery to help black people in need to pull out of their predicament.
Tokyo Five
Do you know 造幣局 (Zohhei Kyoku) here in Osaka ?
Its gate has been opened and I saw many many people visit there for cherry blossom viewing.
When it was raining quite hard two days ago, there was nobody in sight.
But today tens of thousands of people were flowing like a surging river.
I’ve seen 50 huge sightseeing buses rumbling around the Osaka Castle Moat today.
And they are not Japanese.
They come from China and South Korea.
I pass through Osaka Castle Park everyday.
And I thought another 関が原WAR had started when I saw the swarm of people.
Do you think Tokyo will be chosen for the 2016 Olympics ?
Or Chicago will get the lion’s share ?
I’d like to see Tokyo Olympics again, Tokyo Five.

Maybe hard rock. But just because I made a list of heavy metal albums doesn’t mean you have to choose heavy metal album.
I hope everyone will make a list of their all-time favorite albums…whatever genre.
>Please correct the list and teach us what is good and what is not.
I like every album on your list. I have 18 of them in my collection.

Good post!! Yeah, I hate those kinds of rankings, I never agree with the results, I have quite an obscure taste in music so a lot of the bands I like never make it into the rankings anyway. Your list is pretty decent, my brother would love it, I’m not so much into metal though, I used to listen to the Black album a lot when I was younger but my favourite Metallica album is Reload. I haven’t heard Countdown to Extinction, I really like Megadeth’s Youthanasia album though – A Tout le Monde is such a brilliant song, I hated the new version which featured Christina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil, the original is leagues better!
