Ultraman

「ウルトラマン」 (Ultraman) is a Japanese superhero television show from the 1960’s.

「ウルトラマン」 (Ultraman)

「ウルトラマン」 (Ultraman)

The story is basically about an organization that protects Earth from giant alien attacks. But they are always overwhelmed by the monster…fortunately, one member of the organization has a “Beta Capsule” that can be used to summon 「ウルトラマン」 (Ultraman) from the Sun.

「ウルトラマン」 (Ultraman) can only stay on Earth for a short time before he must return to the Sun…otherwise he’ll die. The 「カラータイマー」 (“Color Timer“) on his chest blinks to indicate that he must return soon.

I used to watch 「ウルトラマン」 (Ultraman) reruns dubbed in English on TV in the ’70s when I was a child in America.

In America, 「ウルトラマン」 (Ultraman) is considered low-standard and cheesy.
But here in Japan, 「ウルトラマン」 (Ultraman) is a pop-culture phenomenon. 「ウルトラマン」 (Ultraman) is still popular with young boys in Japan today.

In Japan, there have been numerous spin-off shows including 「ウルトラセブン」 (Ultra Seven), 「帰ってきたウルトラマン」 (Return Of Ultraman), 「ウルトラマン・エース」 (Ultraman Ace), etc as well as 「ウルトラマン」 (Ultraman) movies. And stores in Japan sell 「ウルトラマン」 (Ultraman) toys, clothes, shoes, lunchbox sets, towels, and all kinds of other merchandise.

「ウルトラマン」 (Ultraman) was supposed to take place in the 1990’s…thirty years in the future from when it was filmed.

Have you ever watched 「ウルトラマン」 (Ultraman)? Do you like the series?

    Yes,I love the Ultraman concept.
Although the 70s shows lacked funding and sophisticated sfx the stiryline was gun and the continuing ultraman brother series ie:Ultramanseven, ace, taro,Sofvi etc were brilliant.
Definitely cult classics worth watching if you are into superheroes of a different kind.

Ultraman is still popular in Japan.

Currently there is a car commercial on TV with the Ultraman family…and they are filming a new Ultraman movie. Former Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi recorded his voice for the Ultraman “father” character!

I remember watching Ultraman (first) back in the late 70s on a local Sci-Fi show called “Captain Cosmic”. They were also the first to show Star Blazers (Space Cruiser Yamato) which was dubbed but kept the original soundtrack.

Then in the mid 90’s, TNT would show dubbed versions of Ultra Seven at very late hours (0200-0300 and later) on Friday and Saturday nights. Whoever came up with that idea was a genius!! You get home late after a night of drinking and you watch Seven and his eye slugger…

When I was a kid in the ’70s, Ultraman reruns were on in the morning while I was eating my breakfast before school.

I like the old Batman from TV back in the day with Adam West! Remember?

Yes, I used to watch that Batman TV series in the ’70s when I was a kid.
      I loved it!

But I think the two most recent Batman movies are better.

Yeah, the Greatest American Hero didn’t last long…I thought the whole idea was great.

He got an instruction book for his magic suit and promptly lost it so he goes around not knowing what he can do!

Thundar was a cartoon from the early 80s. Ookla the Mock was his companion.

    Today’s super heroes are lame…

    ULTRAMAN FOREVER!!!

I, too, watched Ultraman in the 70’s on US television!

Ultraman is STILL the MOST kick-ass superhero there ever was.

Thundar the Barbarian was pretty tough and I always liked the Greatest American Hero, but Ultraman…

Thanks for the memories and photos

I don’t know “Thundar the Barbarian“…but “The Greatest American Hero” was a goofy ’80s TV series. 🙂

I wasn’t born until late 1969 so I don’t know about that decade…but I liked to watch the weekly Batman show on TV in the ’70s.
I know now that it was extremely goofy and campy…but I was a little kid at the time, so my friends and I took it very seriously! 😉
I also like the “Incredible Hulk” TV show back then.

Does your children watch Ultraman? Do they like the leather clad awesome looking superhero? I should’ve bought that soft Ultraman toy – it was a rather cute looking one compare to the action toys 😀

My daughters were never interested in Ultraman.

I have two sisters too. When they were young, they weren’t interested in Ultraman, either.

I’d bet most girls don’t care about that type of show.

I remembered watching Ultraman way back in the 80s, dubbed in my language. I always get excited whenever Ultraman is summoned and we used to remember doing the Ultraman moves. Its funny how its considered to be cheesy and low standard when the Power Rangers, to my point of view, was influenced by this awesome action show. It is still being shown over here and I see alot of UM’s merchandise sold here too. My 2 year old nephew for some reason have now dumped his Thomas The Tank Engine for Ultraman and my sister fears that Ultraman is a wee bit too active for a baby like him 🙂

      Which language is that?

      >the Power Rangers, to my point of view, was influenced by this awesome action show.

      Actually, I think America’s “Power Rangers” was inspired by Japan’s 「秘密戦隊ゴレンジャー」 (“Himitsu-sentai-go-ranger“).

      >It is still being shown over here and I see alot of UM’s merchandise sold here too.

Does your country have Ultraman shows and merchandise like Japan does? What country do you live in?

I currently live in Malaysia but Im actually from Brunei and in Brunei we have access to the Malaysian channels hence we got to watch Ultraman. Some shops sell Ultraman merchandises here in Malaysia at their toy section.

Compared to the temperature on the Sun that Ultraman must be used to, Earth must seem very cold (maybe that’s why he wears a leather body suit)…he’d probably want a warm drink. 😉

You should watch it while you’re here in Tokyo (it airs weekly).
Of course it’s in Japanese here, though.
