KISS パチンコ

28 Dec

As I’ve mentioned a few times on this blog (for example: here and here), I’m a big fan of the American rock band KISS.

(By the way, I wrote a post about the Japanese KISS-related movie called Detroit Metal City (click here) last August and it’s still the most popular post on my blog!)

Well, I just found out that a new KISS パチンコ (pachinko) machine has debuted here in Japan.

パチンコ (pachinko) is a Japanese game that can be compared to a vertical pinball machine…with many small balls played simultaneously rather than just one larger ball. And unlike pinball, the object is to get the balls into certain holes at the right time. And, unlike pinball, パチンコ (pachinko) can also be compared to a slot machine in that there’s a payout…albeit the jackpot is more BB balls rather than money (due to anti-gambling laws), but the balls are exchanged for prizes (and then “sold” for money). It’s a loophole in the law, and the only reason for the popularity of パチンコ(pachinko).

I’ve already written a post about パチンコ (pachinko)…(click here to see it).

I’ve played パチンコ (pachinko) a few times…I’m not a big fan of the game—especially since I usually lose and the parlors are noisy and smokey from all the smokers (but recently, many パチンコ (pachinko) parlors have begun enforcing “No Smoking” rules to lure more customers)—but if I happen to see a parlor advertising that they have the new KISS パチンコ (pachinko) machine, I may go inside and try it out! Just because it’s KISS.

Wanna see the website for the KISS パチンコ (pachinko) machine? It’s in 日本語 (Japanese)…but it has a cool Flash® intro.

Click here to visit the KISS パチンコ (pachinko) website.

パチンコ (pachinko) machines, like pinball machines, usually have a theme…and it’s often something from pop-culture. Usually it’s Japanese pop-culture…but sometimes, like the KISS パチンコ (pachinko) machine, it’s from Western culture.

Another example (that may interest a friend of mine whose a big Star Wars fan), is the fairly new Darth Vader パチンコ (pachinko) machine.

I guess the machine’s full name is 「Fever STAR WARS ダース・ベイダー降臨」 (“Fever STAR WARS: Darth Vader’s Arrival“).

It has a 日本語 (Japanese) website with a Flash® intro, too. Click here to see it.

    Sir Pent…

Yeah, if they’re gonna call it “KISSology“, you’d think it’d be more complete!

A number of years ago, I bought Strike magazine’s KISS Bible on CD-Rom.

Have you seen that? (Have you ever seen the Italian “Strike” KISS fan magazine?)

  2. Sir Pent January 28, 2009 at 12:48 pm #

I bought them all. I’m torn about what I think about them:
    A) It’s great to have the footage…the old concerts. It’s great to have them in the “best possible quality”. The non-concert footage is a lot of fun, too.

    B) I am disappointed in the content…
    – the 80s are all but ignored. (We get a Crazy Nights concert and HITS concert. How about some of that Mark St. John footage that we KNOW has to exist somewhere?)
    – some of the concerts have songs edited out
    – a lot of non-concert footage is omitted and the stuff that IS included is frequently edited down severely
    – this is a personal pet peeve but their first show at Coventry is only partially included on the first set instead of the entire show. Instead of having more 80s/90s concerts, they include the FULL Coventry concert on the last set.
So if you buy all 3, you are paying again for the same thing.
I think they could’ve done a much better job overall.

    Sir Pent….

    No. I didn’t buy those.
What do you think of them?

The postcard I sent you still hasn’t arrived.
    I wonder why not!?!

Sorry T5. Never saw this post.

Yes. I have the Kissology DVDs. Do you? What do you think about them?

    Sir Pent….

Do you have the KISS Kissology collection?

I’ve never seen that site before. That’s awesome.
It makes me feel good that there are other people that are just as obsessed with KISS.

    >I never noticed that about the Gene makeup! I’ll have to check that out.

I heard that a long time ago (I can’t remember where I read it first). Actually, when I had a KISS website, I mentioned it on the site.

But I just did a Google about it.
Look at this site (photo #15 at the bottom is the Alive 2 make-up):

I did notice the liner note mistakes in Alive III. I chalked it up to another thing not to like about that album. (My LEAST favorite of any of the Alive releases.) I know that Gene talks about how “tight” the band was…but I’ve heard bootlegs and they were NOT that tight. My guess is that some…if not all…are studio re-recordings plugged into concert recording.

Alive II? I never noticed that about the Gene makeup! I’ll have to check that out. I’m surprised I hadn’t seen that myself, as much as I obsessed over pics of the band. More than that, with all the stuff I read about KISS…how have I not heard that before.

  11. tokyo5 December 30, 2008 at 5:28 pm #

    Sir Pent…

Slightly different subject, but…we were “talking” about the KISS Alive! albums before:

Did you ever notice the mistakes in the Alive III liners?
It says “Watchin’ You” is from the KISS 1 album (rather than the Hotter Than Hell album),
and it says “I Was Made For Lovin’ You” is from the Dressed To Kill album (rather than the Dynasty album).

And did you ever notice on the cover of Alive II that Gene’s make-up is different? The black wings over his eyes connect below his nose in the photo on that album. Gene has said he painted his make-up different for the show that was recorded for the album…he did it so that he’d know which photos were from that particular concert.

I would say her book is specifically for hard-core KISS fans. Completists that have to have everything they can afford. (Which unfortunately because of my compulsive nature, I am.)

She does tell a story from when she was unofficially separated from Peter (when he was cheating on Lydia with his future wife, Debbie the Playboy playmate) that she hooked up with Peter Frampton for a couple of days. Frampton must’ve gotten bored with her quick because within those couple of days he tried to talk her into a threesome!

Like I said…she complained a lot about Peter Criss, but at the same time was getting coked up and sleeping around too.

She won their mansion in Connecticut in the divorce…but the genius didn’t have a real job and eventually had to sell it because she couldn’t afford it. She spent a ton of her divorce money buying up the surrounding land so that developers couldn’t build close to her!

    Sir Pent…

I guess I won’t be buying that book then.

You should’ve seen them in the closest city that they played. KISS shows are great!

    >Do you like KISS, too?

I think most guys that are around our age love KISS. I remember watching KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park, and thinking these guys are awesome.

    >Have you seen any of their shows?

No I unfortunately never have. The city where I come from doesn’t get a lot of big concerts, even though it’s a big city. 😦

  15. Sir Pent December 29, 2008 at 8:47 am #

Lydia Criss’s book was a fun read, but I don’t know if I would recommend it. It has a lot of great stories about Peter and hanging out with Ace and Ace’s ex-wife. It has a lot of stories about the early days. Not a lot of really good dirt on Paul or Gene. She does contradict some of the stories from Gene’s books…same stories but with different details and occurrences.

    1) the rare pics are a lot of fun…but most are VERY low quality. Fuzzy, dark, out of focus. (& she later became a professional photographer?!?!?)

    2) A lot of the book is her complaining about Peter (and the other men in her life) that have taken advantage of her. While I would NEVER condone assaulting a woman, which apparently Peter did on occasion, she never really took responsibility for ANYTHING that happened to her during her life. It was always the fault of whatever man she was with at the time.

Near the end I was thinking, “Well…you married your THIRD drug addict and you’re wondering why he’s treating you bad? Stop dating people that do drugs moron!”

    3) Much of the book is poorly laid out. Small black text on dark backgrounds. Light colored text going over pictures. Just overall poorly designed.

    Do you like KISS, too?

Have you seen any of their shows?

  17. Eric December 29, 2008 at 12:51 am #

I really liked the quotes that you put from Paul and Gene. I bet Paul has never touched a pachinko machine except for the Kiss one. Those guys will say anything to make a buck, especially Gene. I still love em though.

Thanks for commenting on my site! I wish you’d comment more often!

I thought you’d like that Star Wars site! Come to Japan again and play the Star Wars Pachinko.

    >the one where Vader stabs that tiny island in the Pacific with his lightsaber

I guess you already know…but he didn’t stab Japan; it was a business meeting and his light saber was a laser-pointer.

  19. Joe December 28, 2008 at 11:46 pm #

I loved the Star Wars commercials… Especially the one where Vader stabs that tiny island in the Pacific with his lightsaber….

  20. tokyo5 December 28, 2008 at 10:24 pm #

I heard about that book but haven’t read it.

I bet it’s good. Is it?

  21. Sir Pent December 28, 2008 at 10:12 pm #

Holy cow! I forgot about the KISS Popsicles!

I don’t believe a word about them loving the game and spending hours playing.

I got the Lydia Criss book for Christmas. Have you seen it/read it?

  22. tokyo5 December 28, 2008 at 9:19 pm #

I was just looking at the KISS Pachinko website more closely.

There are these quotes from Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley (bass player and rhythm guitarist of KISS, respectively):

“From my first trip to Japan with KISS in 1977, I’ve always loved playing Pachinko and spent countless hours in the Pachinko parlors, particularly in Osaka. Our KISS Pachinko machine is our way of paying tribute to this great game and our great fans.”

    Paul Stanley

(Is it true? Does he really love Pachinko?)

“KISS PACHINKO!!! Four great reasons why this Pachinko game will be the coolest one ever made—The Demon, The Starchild, The Space Man, The Catman. This is something we have always wanted to do and we are very excited. From KISS, to you, our fans.”

    Gene Simmons

(Did they really always want a KISS Pachinko machine??)

    >what won’t they slap their logos and likenesses on anymore?

I guess nothing’s off limits since they have a “KISS casket”!

I remember the black KISS popsicles when I was a kid.

  24. Sir Pent December 28, 2008 at 1:30 pm #

I was reading on Kissonline a few months ago that KISS has licensed a new pinball machine. (Their second…the first being the 1970s model.) I also believe they have licensed a new slot machine.

But then again…what won’t they slap their logos and likenesses on anymore?

  25. tokyo5 December 28, 2008 at 11:41 am #

I forgot to mention…it was a good friend of mine, (the webmaster of this site → ), who told me about the KISS Pachinko machine.

ありがとう!(And let’s meet up again soon!)
